INVOCATION

HYMN OF PRAISE
“Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross”

Jesus keep me near the cross
There a precious fountain
Free to all a healing stream
Flows from Calv’ry’s mountain

In the cross in the cross
Be my glory ever
Till my raptured soul shall find
Rest beyond the river

Near the cross a trembling soul
Love and mercy found me
There the Bright and Morning Star
Sheds its beams around me

In the cross in the cross
Be my glory ever
Till my raptured soul shall find
Rest beyond the river

Near the cross O Lamb of God
Bring its scenes before me
Help me walk from day to day
With its shadows o’er me

In the cross in the cross
Be my glory ever
Till my raptured soul shall find
Rest beyond the river

Near the cross I’ll watch and wait
Hoping trusting ever
Till I reach the golden strand
Just beyond the river.

In the cross in the cross
Be my glory ever
Till my raptured soul shall find
Rest beyond the river

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
From St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Fayetteville AR, Worship Bulletin

Gracious and life-giving God, through the suffering and death of your Son Jesus Christ you have raised us to the new life of grace: Hear our prayers on behalf of all people, that your promise of fruitfulness may extend throughout the world, as we say:

We praise you in the great assembly.
May our hearts live forever.

Magnify the voices of the poor and needy until they fill the hearts and minds and ears of the leaders of this and all nations, that all people in authority may follow in your ways of justice and mercy.

We praise you in the great assembly.
       May our hearts live forever.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
AND RECONCILIATION
Brief silent consideration of how we have responded to our personal and congregational opportunities to do good, as we face ourselves honestly in the presence of the Almighty.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE
May Almighty God have mercy on us
to bless our good works
and forgive us our sins,
and lead us into everlasting life.

PASTORAL PRAYER

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done in earth,
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power,
and the glory,
for ever. Amen.

HYMN OF CELEBRATION
“The Old Rugged Cross”

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of suff’ring and shame
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

O the old rugged cross so despised by the world
Has a wondrous attraction for me
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

In the old rugged cross stained with blood so divine
A wondrous beauty I see
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died
To pardon and sanctify me

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true
Its shame and reproach gladly bear
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away
Where His glory forever I’ll share

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

PASSING THE PEACE

May the peace of Christ be with you all!
And also with you!

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

CONVERSATIONAL SERMON
Everyone is invited to share as the Pastor leads a discussion of these sermon points.
Our Cross

Rejection and Resurrection
And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.  Vs 31 (KJV)

 Paradigm Shift
“Satan, get behind me! You are looking at this only from a human point of view and not from God’s.”   Vs 33 (TLB)

 Personal Cross
“If any of you want to come with me,” he told them, “you must forget yourself, carry your cross, and follow me.”  Vs 34 (GNT)

What Matters Most
What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you,
the real you?   Vs 36 (MSG)

The Real Shame
“If any of you are embarrassed over me and the way I’m leading
you when you get around your fickle and unfocused friends,
know that you’ll be an even greater embarrassment to the
Son of Man when he arrives in all the splendor of God, his Father, with an army of the holy angels.” .   Vs 38 (MSG)

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP
The Altar in our hearts is always open

HYMN OF DEDICATION
“Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone”

Must Jesus bear the cross alone
And all the world go free
No there’s a cross for everyone
And there’s a cross for me

The consecrated cross I’ll bear
Till death shall set me free
And then go home my crown to wear
For there’s a crown for me

Upon the crystal pavement
Down at Jesus’ pierced feet
Joyful I’ll cast my golden crown
And His dear name repeat

O precious cross O glorious crown
O resurrection day
Ye angels from the stars come down
And bear my soul away

How happy are the saints above
Who once went sorr’wing here
But now they taste unmingled love
And joy without a tear

GOING FORTH TO LOVE OTHERS
AS CHRIST LOVES US

CHORAL BENEDICTION
“Beloved, Let Us Love One Another”

Beloved let us love one another
For love is of God and ev’ryone that loveth
Is born of God and knoweth God
He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love
Beloved let us love one another
